IUE nurses start their profession by taking their oaths
Nurses from Izmir University of Economy were sent off on their professional journey by taking the International Pledge for Nurses at the online graduation ceremony. Due to the concerns regarding the Covid-19 pandemic period, Izmir University of Economics Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing 2019-2020 Academic Year Graduation Ceremony was held in a virtual environment with the participation of the students' families.
Faculty members of IUE Faculty of Health Sciences also attended the ceremony in their academic gowns, which started with singing of the National Anthem and observing a minute of silence. Prof. Filiz Öğce, Dean of Faculty of Health Sciences and Head of Department of Nursing, delivered the opening speech of the ceremony that was presented by Res. Asst. Ecem Özgül.
Department of Nursing faculty members Prof. Tülay Yavan, Prof. Özgül Karayurt, Assoc. Prof. Nihal Çürük and Asst. Prof. Huriye Vural also wished success to the nurses in their professional life at the ceremony.
Prof. Filiz Öğce, Dean of IUE Faculty of Health Sciences, said that based on the understanding that one cannot graduate without taking the nursing oath, they decided to hold their graduation ceremonies online. Emphasizing that there was a special oath ceremony and students gained many different experiences during their 4-year education, Prof. Öğce said, “You are now our colleagues, not our students. You are our second graduates as a department. You will continue the road as a health soldier. Good luck.”
Stating that the International Nursing Oath was written by Nurse Lystra Gretter in 1893, Prof. Öğce said that today, nurses take an oath that they will practice their profession in line with ethical rules before graduating.
At the ceremony, Havva Nur Uçar, highest ranking student in Department of Nursing, Elif Dağtekin, second highest ranking student in Department, and Büşra Özkan, Class Representative, shared their feelings. The students repeated the Nursing Oath after Prof. Öğce, Head of Department of Nursing all together and took the first step in their professional life by taking an oath.
Students, who could not throw caps at the graduation ceremony held in the new normalization period, threw off their masks towards the end of the ceremony. Aiming to raise awareness about the use of masks, the students also threw their masks, which will replace the cap, with the slogan "We hope to have days when we can do activities freely", at the end of the ceremony.
